What is this place?

This site is a database of information about Hello! Project. I have done my best to put pretty much everything I have gathered about the girls available on this site. You won't find many pictures, there are no mp3s, videos, photobooks or other media on this site. The site is a completely inofficial fansite.

There are some other frequently asked questions below; the links before news summary are shown on this page, so there's no extra loading if you click them. If you are interested in the history and background of this site, here's an artice about it.

New: Another game (video quiz)

The most recent addition to the games of this site is the Video Quiz, which makes you guess which PVs various still shots are from.

Where to start

If you know what you are looking for, the links on the sidebar may be helpful, as may be the "go to" form below them. If you are simply wondering about what there is on this site, the "Everything Else" link in the sidebar should be useful. If you don't even know what Hello! Project is, you might want to take a look at this article.

What is Hello! Project

Hello! Project in short, is a group of Japanese artists and groups produced by Tsunku. The best known group is Morning Musume and best known soloists are probably Aya Matsuura and Maki Goto. Hello! Project is known for mostly having cute girls as the singers.

Updates - at last

It has again been long since I last updated anything. I've largely lost the motivation to follow what happens with Hello! Project, and in addition to that I've had other things that have kept me quite busy.

But as it has been quite long, I decided to dedicate some time in hunting down what has happened since the last update batch and make things up-to-date again.

The following list covers most of the changes; I'm too lazy to look up the names right now, you should be able to find the details from the linked pages.

A new game

Laker made a suggestion for a new game, and I loved the idea, and after spending some time working on it, the game is now on-line.

The game presents you pictures from various promotion videos, and it's your task to recognize which video it is.

Enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions and info

Where can I find more information?

Should you need additional information, your best bet would probably be going to the Morning Musume section of Jpopmusic.com forums. There are some sticky threads with good links.

In addition to that, theppn Wiki (which covers everything related to Asian music) is a good place to start.
Then there is Miracle Night (also known as miracle-night.net although the URL is no longer valid). It is perhaps one of the more traditional basic information sources in English H!P community, but the site hasn't been updated since April of last year so there is quite a bit of outdated info.

Why not make the site into a wiki?

There are definately arguments for making this kind of site into a wiki. The fact that anyone can make changes when necessary is often great, but then there is of course the other side of things, where anyone can make changes THEY desire.

If I were to rebuilt the site from scratch I would definately consider wiki as a format, but the fact is that I probably wouldn't do it, as ThePPN wiki is quite sufficient in this regard and needs no competition -- joint effort works best when there is only one target.

The original, and still most notable problem with wikis and not with the system I use is inconsistency. I ran into this myself as I contributed to the theppn wiki (not much, but anyways). With the database system every page of a category is similar to every other page, although exceptions can be made if so desired. Just about every piece of data has some metadata by nature, as it is not simply typed as text, but inputted as the proper field. This makes it more or less trivial to create things like timelines -- not by typing the data, but by utilizing the data already in the system! If I for some reason need a page with list of all H!P members over 20 years old, all I need is a single SQL query to do the job. And this is only part of the "magic" in it.

In conclusions, wikis have their places, and this isn't one of them.

The colors are awful

While some pages are colored rather oddly the pink in my opinion is quite ok now that there have been some changes to the original colors.

After I updated the way the site looks during the summer the theme support was lost, as I didn't really want to bother with making even more extra versions of the site for the time being. If there is demand for more "masculine" color scheme, it is still relatively easy to accomplish. In other words: if pink is not for you, there's the feedback button on the sidebar.

There is some outdated information

Yes, things like this do happen sometimes. I would appreciate being informed about the problem (there is Feedback link on the sidebar; you can be anonymous if you want)

There are some lacking sections, but most of the data should be up-to-date.

That's not how you spell <certain person/group/song/whatever>

I've done my best to use the most common romanizations of all Japanese names and people often feel differently as to which is the correct way. If there are any obvious problems please point them out and I'll fix them.

Probably most common cases where there are multiple interpretations are things like whether じゃ should be romanized "jya" or "ja" (eg. Fighting Pose wa Date Jyanai, and whether (certain) katakana words should be simply romanized or basically replaced by the original word (eg. The Peace / Sa Piisu (at least I think that was its direct romanization)).

Some problems are most likely caused by the fact that I understand *very* little Japanese and on the other hand English is not my native language. Had I made this site in my native language of Finnish the site would still have at most 50 interested visitors who understand the language. :)

<h3>Some page or link shows an error message</h3>That shouldn't have happened. Please contact us through feedback link on the sidebar and inform us what you did / where the link was.

The site has been public for almost a year now (although I didn't even mention it anywhere until October, when everything was working well enough) and most of the bugs have been worked out, and despite making changes and improvements I've tried my best to make sure that all links that people have made linking to the site still take the visitors to the correct page.

One of the more likely problems is with some song titles with "odd characters". I've tried to make sure everything works, but there may well be some album songs or such I've not checked.

And last but not least, the way features are added to the site is such that the feature normally appears on all pages of the same category simultaneously. If some affected page is based on data I didn't expect, there's no telling what will happen. This should be rare, but, for example, many programmers should be aware of the surprising problems caused by the fact that Tsunku was born before 1970...

You stole something from <insert site here>

Other sites have been sources for information, nothing else, and facts can't be copyrighted.

I do have to admit to using similar sentences as my sources on occasions, but that is caused by the fact that my command of the English language isn't perfect and I tried to relay the nuances I couldn't express in any other way.

I do not own the copyright to the images shown on this site, unless explicitly otherwise stated.

I want to link to this site / page on this site

There is now a separate page that covers the URLs you should link to -- Available here.

I want you to link to my site

Click feedback on the sidebar and tell me about your site and I'll think about it.

As I want to retain the informative nature of the site, I am not going to accept all submitted sites regardless of their quality. At least following restrictions apply:
  • The site should have at least as much information about the subject it covers as Hello! Database has (this is mostly enforced on sites about a single person; I'm not expecting Morning Musume sites to have as much info as hpdb)
  • The site should look good or at least ok; looks aren't everything, but they are still quite important. Unique but ugly sites may be acceptable.
  • The site will only be listed on most relevant page(s); eg. sites about Eri will be listed only on page about Eri. And possibly on a link collection page if I decide to add one.
  • I am not obliged to link to your site just because you link to mine; then again, I do not expect the opposite either.
  • The site should be update regularily
  • Sites in Japanese may be acceptable, but English is always the preferred language.
  • A site that contains enough good information may be added even if other restrictions would deny it.
